The Winchendon Project - Phase III Grant

Phase III of The Winchendon Project (TWP) will continue to build on the work done in each of the first two phases including providing school-based behavioral health services; coordinating school and community resources through the work of the Learning Supports Facilitator; continuing a social norming campaign to address youth substance use; working to integrate the provision of medical and behavioral health services; introducing the All-Stars curriculum (a program to delay the onset of or prevent substance use, violence and sexual activity in youths ages 11 to 14); and establishing Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (a community organizing program designed to reduce adolescent access to alcohol by changing community policies and practices) in Winchendon.

The goals of Phase III include:
- building the capacity of staff at Murdock Middle High School to address youth behavioral health and substance use issues so that they can be addressed before clinical intervention is the only option,
- continuing to provide school-based behavioral health services which will also include collateral services, and
- institutionalizing systems to ensure that school personnel continue to be aware of available community resources.

The Winchendon Project will continue to be supportive of the Children's Mental Health Campaign, most specifically in their efforts to ensure payment for collateral contacts which are especially important in behavioral health services for children.

The Winchendon Project - Phase II Grant

Phase I of the Winchendon Project has resulted in behavioral health services are being offered at the Murdock Middle High School and hiring of the Learning Supports Facilitator. Ongoing work includes the development of a resource map of available local services, which should be completed by the end of this academic year, and the development of a social norming campaign, which is scheduled to begin in early 2009. Phase II of The Winchendon Project will include sustaining the components put in place during Phase I and expanding community programming using more targeted substance abuse prevention strategies, including All Stars -- a program to delay the onset of or prevent substance use; violence and sexual activity in youths ages 11 to 14; and Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol -- a community organizing program designed to reduce adolescent access to alcohol by changing community policies and practices.

The Winchendon Project - Phase I Grant

Phase I of The Winchendon Project will begin to modify the risk and protective factors of students in four domains of the lives of young people - individual, family, peer and community. The primary target population for Phase I are the students at the Murdock Middle/High School. This project will introduce a series of school-based interventions, including increasing the availability of mental health services on site, adding a learning supports facilitator and conducting a social norming campaign. In addition to working with the students, the project will involve the parents of the 7^th and 8^th grades and the school staff who work primarily with these two grades.

The Winchendon Project - Planning Grant

The Joint Coalition on Health of North Central Massachusetts, representing some 40 agencies and individuals, has as its goal for this project the improvement of access to care for mental health and substance abuse for 12,700 adolescents and young adults (ages 10 to 29) in the region. They will look at the continuum of care available and the gaps that need to be addressed; access and integration of care issues; prevention, education and screening; and sustainability including the development of a public policy advocacy agenda.
