During the Health Foundation’s first full year of grantmaking in 2001, over $2 million in grants were awarded to area organizations through the Health Care and Health Promotion Synergy Initiative, the Activation Fund, Board-Designated Grants, and the Recognition Award program. The health issues addressed in these grants include dental and oral health, children’s mental health, physical activity and wellness, workplace violence prevention, cancer education, and homelessness. These grants, together with the Foundation’s first awards announced in December 2000, bring the new philanthropy’s total grantmaking to $2,647,908.

The Center for Adoption Research at UMass Medical School will work with the New England Institute for Attachment and Bonding at Children's Friend to document the efficacy of short-term intensive attachment therapy, as compared with other therapies, in improving the cognitive and psychosocial functioning of children.

The Blackstone Valley Vocational Regional School will work with the Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital, Physical Therapy Innovations and Bread & Circus Whole Foods Market to develop a program to reduce adolescent obesity and improve student wellness.

The American Cancer Society of New England will create cancer information centers at Simonds-Sinon Center in Fitchburg, Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge, and UMass Memorial Health Care and Worcester Medical Center in Worcester.

Title:Central Massachusetts Mental Health Services StudyAmount:$48,555

The University of Massachusetts Medical School's Center for Mental Health Research will partner with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health to initiate a longitudinal study to determine the efficacy of treatment interventions and social services for the mentally ill, which will allow individuals to live and function independently in the community.

Grant Type: Synergy Initiative - Central Massachusetts Oral Health Initiative (CMOHI)
This partnership of 14 health-related organizations will pilot a model for providing increased access to oral health services, oral health education, and dental decay preventive measures.

Partners include the Worcester District Dental Society, Quinsigamond Community College, Great Brook Valley Health Center, The Family Health Center of Worcester, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and others.

The Genesis Club, Inc. in partnership with Assumption College, UMass Medical School's Center for Mental Health Services Research, Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, Worcester County Food Bank and the Greendale YMCA will develop and implement a physical activity and wellness program for members with psychiatric disabilities.

Grant Type: Synergy Initiative - Oral Health Initiative of North Central Massachusetts (OHINCM)
The Joint Coalition on Health of North Central Massachusetts, the Gardner Area Interagency Team, and the Fitchburg/Gardner Area Community Health Network Area will work to define a model to increase access to dental care and provide dental health education and promote oral disease prevention in North Central Massachusetts.

The Southbridge Interfaith Hospitality Network, Inc. will create a program in South Worcester County that will provide food and shelter for homeless families, along with referrals for training and employment through a consortium of 10 churches and synagogues.

Family Services of Central Massachusetts will work with the Central Massachusetts Employers Association, the Worcester Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police to develop policies, procedures, and training for employers to maintain a safe working environment for employees.
