Grants Made in 2000

In a year marked by growth, The Health Foundation reached its first major grantmaking milestone on December 26, 2000, when the directors announced six major grants, totaling $460,662. The health issues addressed in these grants include dental and oral health, support for family caregivers for the elderly, the protection of children from sexual and physical abuse, and access to and education about prescription drugs. In addition, the Foundation awarded another $67,000 in smaller grants and designated the recipients of $50,000 in awards, bringing the total distributed to $577,662.

Grant Type: Synergy Initiative - Central Massachusetts Family Caregiving Center
The Central Massachusetts Agency on Aging, in partnership with the Jewish Family Service of Worcester, Family Services of Central Massachusetts, the VNA Care Network, and other agencies serving elders, will coordinate services.

Grant Type: Synergy Initiative - Central Massachusetts Oral Health Initiative (CMOHI)
The Worcester District Dental Society will work in partnership with Quinsigamond Community College, Great Brook Valley Health Center, the Family Health Center, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and others, to develop a model to increase access to dental care and to prevent poor oral health in the region.

Grant Type: Synergy Initiative - Child Abuse Prevention and Protection Collaborative (CAPPC)
The UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center will work with other regional organizations who are focused on the prevention and treatment of child physical and sexual abuse to create a multidisciplinary system to address the issue.

The Great Brook Valley Health Center is working on a program to establish the first on-site dental laboratory that will construct  prosthetics and dentures at a community health center in the country.

Recipient:Family Health Center of Worcester
Grant Type: Activation Fund
Family Health Center of Worcester will work with Great Brook Valley Health Center and UMass Medical School to establish an onsite pharmacy to provide medication education in collaboration with the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with partial funding from the Federal Office of Pharmacy Affairs.
